Today’s post is about 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel by Jane Smiley. The last chapter of this book made a big impact on me. The first 12 chapters discuss the novel – its origins, psychology, morality, and art – discuss these facets in depth.
Chapter 13 – Reading a Hundred Novels – now THAT got my attention. I like to read. A lot. Calculator in hand.. let’s see – 100 novels… one per month seems reasonable. That will take…8 years, 4 months.
That was November 2011. I have made my way through the first 6, now reading the 7th. They are The Tale of Genji, Egil’s Saga, The Saga of the People of Laxardal, The Decameron, Lazarillo de Tormes, The Heptameron, and my current read, Don Quixote. Smiley arranged the list in chronological order – Tale of Genji was written in 1004!
